Natural Birthstones Colors
Natural gemstone colors are ranked according to their rarity and value. The following information details what causes the different natural colors:

  • Blue Colors are caused by the presence of the element Boron (B) which changes the conductivity of the gemstones
  • Red, Pink & Brown Colors are caused by crystal lattice defects during the formation of the gemstone
  • Purple coloration is caused by the presence of iron and/or manganese
  • Yellow Colors are caused by the presence of the element Nitrogen (N) which changes the conductivity of gemstones
  • White - Colors - Some gemstones, such as the diamond and topaz are transparent and colorless and are referred to as a white colors
  • Green Colors are caused by exposure to the natural radiation in the earth such as uranium ore

Other Factors affecting the Colors of Birthstones - Synthetic Gemstones
Other factors affecting the colors of birthstones containing gemstones include fluorescence and color enhancements produced by high pressure, high temperature treatment and irradiation. The process called Irradiation is used to change the colors of gemstones, these are called the treated stones. Synthetic colored gems are not natural as they are created by man in a laboratory. Synthetic gemstones are much cheaper than those with natural colors making them easily affordable to everyone.

From Ancient times wise men and healers have believed that jewels and gemstones have mystical powers and conduct the energies of the ruling planets with which each gemstone is associated which affect our physical or emotional well being and healing powers. Gemstones and their attributes were related to signs of the Zodiac or month of birth and referred to as Birthstones.
